FOREST PRESERVATION, REHABILITATION AND EXTENSION STRATEGY (SPREF)

On May 17, 2018, the Ivorian government adopted a new policy for the preservation, rehabilitation and extension of forests. This new policy stipulates differential management of classified forests according to categories based on the rate of forest cover. The introduction of the concept of “agro- forest” in the national policy aims on the one hand to reconcile forestry and agriculture and, on the other hand, to protect and expand the remaining forest heritage.

The private sector is involved in the management of agroforests through concession agreements. The objective of these agreements is, on the one hand, to support producers and, on the other, to participate in the restoration of the forest cover of these areas.

The effective implementation of this policy and the resulting strategy of preservation, rehabilitation and extension of forests will allow Côte d’Ivoire to recover 20% of its forest cover by 2045.
